ABSTRACT

Oklahoma's first year of recorded oil production was 1891. By statehood in 1907, Oklahoma ranked first in oil production in the United States. Within the State, 31 major oil and gas fields have produced 53% of the oil and 36% of the gas from the 73 productive counties in Oklahoma.

The annual number of wells completed in the State peaked in 1913, 1920, 1954 and 1982, when the all time high of 12,012 wells were completed. The annual oil production was greatest in 1927 at 278 million barrels. 1984 production was 168.6 million barrels of oil. Annual gas production reached just over 2 trillion cubic feet in 1984, the highest so far. The reported value of the total oil and gas production in the State is 89 billions of dollars; half of this amount has been realized since 1980.
