CAMBRIAN (PRE-KNOX) NATURAL GAS PLAYS OF THE APPALACHIAN BASIN*
David C. Harris, Kentucky Geological Survey, Lexington, Kentucky, 40506
Abstract
The pre-Knox interval of clastic and carbonate rocks in the Appalachian basin contains the deepest, thus least explored sequence of potential reservoirs in this region. Natural gas production from pre-Knox reservoirs in the Appalachian basin has been reported from Cambrian Conasauga and Rome Formations (and equivalent units) in localized small pools in northeastern Ohio, northeastern Kentucky, northwestern West Virginia, and southwestern Ontario, Canada. The large number of scattered shows reported from below the Knox in deep wells indicates an excellent largely untested exploration potential. Accumulations of natural gas are thought to occur in both stratigraphic and structural traps. As deep drilling continues on favorable seismic prospects the additional geologic information gathered will allow the refinement of current depositional and structural models thought to represent the deeper intervals.
