USE OF PC-BASED SEISMIC ANALYSIS SOFTWARE TO IMPROVE EXPLORATION FOR ROSE RUN REMNANTS
ABSTRACT
Many companies have large libraries of old, previously interpreted seismic data in the Rose Run play of little current value. Can reevaluation of this data on PC-based seismic analysis software identify new prospects worth drilling? Over 70 previously evaluated lines, mostly from Holmes and Coshocton counties, Ohio, were restudied using such a system. Attention focused on 26 lines with drilled prospects, of which 14 encountered Rose Run erosional remnant highs. Study showed that the confirmed remnants exhibit frequency and amplitude characteristics which are best seen, and in some cases, only seen, on special screen displays. Amplitude anomalies, so prominent as "eyebrows"on many Rose Run play lines, are absent on some producing features until the line is filtered to show only low frequency energy. The remnants also show a strong anomaly on the instantaneous frequency attribute display, with the dominant frequency dropping to low and mid frequency range on and over the remnant. While the larger remnants, and the structures that localize them, are usually obvious on standard plots, smaller remnants may in some cases only be recognized by these criteria. The 26 wells were virtually all drilled on or near a structure. Can these criteria help recognize off-structure remnants?
