Sampling and Treatment of Unconsolidated Sediments for Study of Internal Structures

Arnold H. Bouma (2)

ABSTRACT

A revealing picture of the internal sedimentary structures of unconsolidated sediments can be obtained by utilizing special sampling techniques which employ simple but small (8^Prime^times6^Prime^times3^Prime) sample boxes. The material collected is treated with Araldite Casting Resin F and Hardener 902 or 951 or with Epocast 530 2A & B so that a representative "peel" can be removed for study. The sampling technique is presently restricted to material that is not underwater; good results can be obtained in just a few days, especially in non-claye sediments.
