Abstract
Tectonic Polish of Pebbles
H. Edward Clifton
ABSTRACT
Certain Miocene units in the southeastern Caliente Range of California contain polished pebbles. The polished surfaces of these pebbles are crossed by parallel microstriations, tiny polished grooves similar in appearance to slickenside striae. Within a single bed or sequence of beds, the striations have a pronounced overall orientation approximately normal to the regional structural trend. This alignment precludes a predepositional origin for the polish and suggests that internal movement during deformation polished the pebbles. Parallel microstriations also occur on polished pebbles from various units elsewhere, suggesting that tectonic polish may be fairly common.
