Climatic Significance of Roundness and Percentage of Quartz in Conglomerates

Renzo Dal Cin

ABSTRACT

The percentage of quartz pebbles and their degree of roundness has been related in 214 gravelly and conglomeratic deposits of known climatic environments. The diagram resulting can be successfully employed in paleoclimatological studies of conglomeratic deposits of unknown origin. In fact, the diagram marks out fairly clearly four main climatic environments: warm-humid, semiarid, temperate, and cold (glacial and periglacial).
