The Control of Mud Crack Patterns by Small Gastropod Trails

ABSTRACT

The shallow groove-like trails of the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae are shown to control the patterns of desiccation cracks which subsequently developed on the same mud surface. Criteria for recognition of a biogenic origin to ancient mud cracks are outlined.
