Abstract: The Geology and Hydrocarbon Prospectivity Offshore Timor Leste South - a Review Based on the 2005 Non - Exclusive Seismic Survey
Abstract
The 2005 non exclusive seismic survey shot by GGS/BGP has given important information about the geological setting of the Timor Through. On the Australian (South) side of the through, mapping has revealed numerous potentially hydrocarbon-bearing structures. Some of these show encouraging AVO effects in the top Plover reservoir sections. Other interesting observations include evidence of crustal shortnening expressed in compressional structures. Such compression, may have reactivated normal faults, and may play a role in reservoir fault - seal. In the area to the North of the through, the Mesozoic has generally been thought to be buried (underplated) deeply beneath a young thrusted molasse section. Seismic investigation, including iso-interval-velocity gridding, suggests that the Mesozoic strata also can be positioned at more shallow levels. This could represent a high-risk/high-reward play, especially due excellent seal conditions, and also the fact that deeper burial of the source gives better conditions for maturity than that seen to the South of the Timor through.
