Abstract

The remaining exploration potential of the East Java Basin has been analysed in terms of 19 plays, based on a detailed analysis of stratigraphic sequences in the basin. Migration limits from each of the main source rock sequences have been plotted by post-drill classification of wells at each play level into dry valid tests, valid tests with oil or gas shows, or wells with proven oil. The results provide insight into the lateral and vertical migration limits from the mature sources, providing the explorer with a predictive tool for further exploration in this prolific basin. For each play, reservoir presence and effectiveness and the presence or absence of top seal have also been analysed and detailed split-risk CRS maps based on results-constrained risking at the prospect and play level have been produced for each of these elements. This play-based approach has been augmented by statistical analysis of field and well metadata. The methodology, which is repeatable and applicable to other South East Asian Basins should lead to better predictive capabilities for success as the focus shifts to areas outside established fairways or to plays with significant stratigraphic trapping components.
