Abstract
Abstract: Re-energizing Exploration in the Eastern Foldbelt of Papua New Guinea: a Journey from the Gulf of Papua to the Jungles of the Highlands
Oil and gas exploration in the fold belts of Papua New Guinea started in earnest in the early 20th century, fuelled by the discovery of numerous hydrocarbon seeps, though the first commercial-sized discovery was only made in 1985. The numerous technical and environmental challenges confronting the explorers there has led to a rather uncommon creaming curve for these basins, and hence still remain highly prospective as the plays remain somewhat immature.
In this talk, we will quickly review the current understanding of the plays in the Eastern Fold Belt and introduce how ExxonMobil is looking at re-energizing its exploration portfolio. We will show that in areas of such subsurface complexity and challenging natural conditions, integration of multiple datasets is critical for success. Finally, we will celebrate the current execution of ExxonMobil’s first operated seismic campaign in Onshore PNG.
