Gasoline Contamination in Moab, Utah - the Nations First LUST1 Trust Fund Site

William E. Moore Jr., Jim Olsen

Abstract

The city of Moab, Utah has had ground water contaminated with gasoline for at least the last three years. The plume which originated from two potentially responsible party’s underground storage tank systems, has resulted in the evacuation of four families from their homes. The State of Utah’s Bureau of Solid and Hazardous Waste Underground storage Tank program used the United States Environmental Protection Agencies Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund in the nations first application of the fund. The fund was used to provide relocation costs to the home owners, and establish an emergency water mounding and recovery system which simultaneously protected an endangered fish and wildlife habitat. To complete this project, the trust fund is designated to fund the total site remediation of the 10 to 12 acres contaminated by the plume within the next two to six years.
