Geothermal Exploration at Cove Fort-Sulphurdale, Utah1 1972-1992

Gerald W. Huttrer

Abstract

An area of more than eight square miles around Cove Fort-Sulphurdale, Utah has been leased and extensively explored for geothermal resources since 1972. The results of comprehensive geological, geochemical and geophysical studies have been analyzed and 21 wells have been sited and drilled on the basis of these surveys. To date, a dry steam cap of limited extent and a medium temperature liquid dominated resource have been discovered and characterized. The geothermal environment has been repeatedly modeled and it appears likely that future exploration will extend the boundaries of the hot water resource to, and possibly beyond, the limits of the current leasehold.
