North Fork and Cellars Ranch Fields, Johnson Co., Wyoming: Examples of Late Permian Tectonism and Resultant Differential Sedimentation

W. Richard Moore

Abstract

North Fork and Cellars Ranch fields, located on the west flank of the Powder River Basin, have produced 24 million barrels of oil from Permian Minnelusa sandstones. Oil is trapped in the fields in two adjacent anticlinal closures. Thick Goose Egg sections, which overlie the Minnelusa, are present on the west flanks of the fields and provide evidence of Permian growth of the structures and resultant differential sedimentation. Other explanations for the thick Goose Egg sections including reverse faulting, salt solution, or deposition in erosional lows are discounted. Knowledge of timing of the deformation is critical to a successful exploration program.
