Abstract: Proving Reserves Without Drilling

An old but relatively unused pressure-transient technique called a “reservoir-limit test” is available for determining reserves connected to a well, without costly (and risky) additional drilling. The technique simply involves flowing the well for a predetermined time period and measuring the bottomhole pressure response. Should a boundary be encountered during the flow period, the volume of reserves connected to the well can be calculated. Should no boundary be encountered, a minimum-reserves calculation is made.
