United States dependence upon foreign sources for many critical mineral commodities has become a serious strategic and economic problem. Many of these strategic minerals are known to occur in the marine environment, but the depositional models, exploration technologies, and recovery/processing economics are not well developed. This talk reviews the types and occurrences of known marine minerals with particular emphasis upon the genetic (exploration) models for selected types of submarine placer deposits.
